The aim of the double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical study was to show the clinical effect of Kneipp Granulat Psyllium®, a product of the husk of Indian plantain (Plantaginis ovatae testis), on the lipid metabolism compared to placebo. 161 patients with hypercholesterinemia were tested. The total serum cholesterol decreased statistically significant under a 3-week therapy with Psyllium compared to placebo. In addition, Psyllium reduced the values of low density lipoproteins and Apolipoprotein B unequivocally. In about 70% of the patients the physicians judged the efficacy and safety of Psyllium as good or very good. Thus, Psyllium is an effective and safe drug for the treatment of hypercholesterinemia.
